Science Education Senior Program Officer at Howard Hughes Medical Institute

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Program Officer to join our Science Education department at our headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD.

We seek a Senior Program Officer who will contribute to and help to lead the diverse science education programs and initiatives. In particular, the Senior Program Officer will help to coordinate science education competitive grant activities to research universities which include institutional grants to research universities and the HHMI Professors program. This includes design and implementation of new competitions, management of active grants, and activities related to ongoing research and evaluation of program impact. An important aspect of this position is broad and current knowledge of the science education landscape, especially at research universities. To this end, the Senior Program Officer will regularly engage with scientists and educators through appropriate venues such as professional and scientific societies, conferences, and workshops. The Senior Program Officer will participate in ongoing conversations with other stakeholders and funding agencies to coordinate efforts for national impact.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Program Administration. Works with other HHMI staff to administer and manage grant programs. As assigned by the Director, serves as primary contact person and representative for science education initiatives aimed at research universities (currently including the institutional grants to research universities and the HHMI Professors program).
  • Program Evaluation. Works with other HHMI staff and under the leadership of the Assistant Director to coordinate regular assessment of programs, including annual reports, site visits and other strategies as arranged. Participates in review of annual progress reports from all active institutional grantees. Evaluates program impact and identify critical factors for successful administration and future design of university science education programming.
  • Competition Management. Works with the Director and Assistant Director to develop and run grant competitions. Works with other HHMI staff to support competitions from initial program announcement and proposal review through selection and execution of grant awards.
  • Personnel Management. Works closely with the Director and Assistant Director to manage staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, development, evaluation, and, if necessary, disciplinary action. Assists in resolving complex employee relations problems. Ensures employees understand and contribute to the program’s objectives, have performance plans linked to the program’s objectives, and receive at least an annual performance appraisal.
  • Budget Management. Works closely with the Director and Assistant Director to develop and manage the budget for relevant programs.
  • Communications. As assigned by the Director, represents programs in meetings with Institute senior management; prepares drafts of documents, including materials for Trustees, as directed. Represents programs to science education stakeholder communities including presentations at conferences, and participation on working panels.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent in biology or other science.
  • Minimum of five years of experience as a faculty member in a university environment.
  • Recent and extensive experience in academic science, including managing a research program and teaching science to undergraduates. 
  • Outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills with a management style that encourages open expressions of ideas, and opinions.
  • Creative thinker and the ability to design effective strategies.
  • Proven record of innovative and independent problem-solving skills, combined with excellent communication, interpersonal, and managerial skills.
  • Sound judgment and independent initiative. 
  • Must possess excellent presentation and communication skills, both oral and written. 
  • Must be able to effectively multi-task, prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage critical issues in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in and foster a collaborative work environment.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
