West Valley College is now accepting
applications for a full-time, tenure-track instructor position in
mathematics, requiring the ability to teach courses from arithmetic and
beginning algebra through calculus, differential equations and linear
algebra, as well as, mathematics courses like business calculus and
statistics that support other majors. We are currently seeking
applicants who have successful experience and a genuine interest in
working with under-represented groups.
West Valley College, though just minutes from the heart of the
Silicon Valley, is in a beautiful park-like setting on 143 wooded acres.

Assignment |
This is a full-time, 10-month,
tenure-track position that begins in Fall 2013. Instructional
assignments may include day and/or evening classes, Monday thru
Saturday, as needed and rotate among the Math faculty. It is expected
that over several semesters all levels of Mathematics offered at the
college will be taught.

Salary and Benefits |
- Anticipated Hiring Range: $48,891 to $76,087 annually, is based on academic achievement, teaching and related experience.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Master’s degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics OR
- Bachelor’s degree in either of the above AND
- Master’s degree in statistics, physics or mathematics education and
at least nine (9) semester units of graduate level math courses OR
- Possess a valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in mathematics OR
- The equivalent of the above. Degrees must be earned from an
accredited institution. Candidates with degrees not identical to the
required state or local qualifications must apply for equivalency by
completing the equivalency form which is part of the application
package. This form must be completed for employment consideration.
- Candidates with foreign degrees must provide official certification
of equivalency to U.S. degrees, by a certified U.S. credential review
service. Simple translation of the language on foreign diplomas,
transcripts, coursework, or similar will NOT suffice, thus will cause the application packet to be judged as incomplete.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively teach, counsel or work with
persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic
backgrounds.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities |
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
- Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes
preparation, in class activities, evaluation of students’ work,
consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond
normal office hours if necessary), maintenance of currency in the
subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the
assigned classes.
- Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and stated district and college needs.
- Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, classes and office hour schedules.
- Follow course outline for each course with the appropriate division offices.
- Post and maintain office hours each week in accordance with the
collective bargaining agreement. Office hours must be posted and filed
in the division chair’s office on or before the start of the semester.
Office hours must be scheduled in no less than 30-minute segments.
- Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
- Provide each student with a written course syllabus as per instructions in the Faculty handbook at the beginning of the course.
- Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
- Work cooperatively within the college community.
- Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
- Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
- Demonstrate positive communication skills within the college community.
- Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
- Assume institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the
department, division, college and/or District such as: actively
participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division,
college and district institutional responsibilities. Such
responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule
preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship,
supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention,
curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club
advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as
assigned.

Selection Process |
- After the deadline date, a committee will review and evaluate
applications and supporting materials to select the applicants to be
interviewed. Meeting the minimum qualifications does not assure the
candidate an interview.
- All candidates will receive an e-notification to acknowledge
receipt of their application materials. If not contacted within 3-6
weeks following the close of the recruitment, no suitable match was
determined at this time.
- The District may choose to re-advertise or indefinitely delay
filling a position. Some positions may include first and second level
