TT or T at Portland State University

Assistant/Associate Professor of Physics - Physics Department - Tenure Track

Tenure-track position in the Department of Physics of Portland State University, starting Fall 2015.  Assistant Professor preferred; Associate Professor possible. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely-related field completed by the start of the position is required. Demonstrated success in research is required; successful teaching experience is desirable.

The successful applicant will join a growing department with 12 permanent faculty, approximately 30 M.S. and Ph.D. and 60 undergraduate students.  Research programs in PSU Physics are primarily in the areas of biophysics, climate science, physics education, and electronic materials/nanotechnology. Candidates in experimental, theoretical, or computational research in one or more of these fields are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is expected to build an active externally funded research program in his or her area of expertise. We actively encourage participation by undergraduates as well as graduate students in these research activities. Further, it is anticipated that the person filling this position will contribute substantively to the physics curriculum.

Faculty at PSU are engaged in many collaborative efforts, both in research and in teaching, with other departments such as Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science and Resources, Geology, and Biology. The university supports a number of interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs, and new Centers for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication, Genomics, the Center for Climate and Aerosol Research, and Life in Extreme Environments have been formed in the last several years.

In addition to interactions within the university, many collaborations exist with faculty from the Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU). The Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (ONAMI) is a regional source of collaborative opportunities that connects Oregon's three public research universities - Oregon State University, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon, as well as the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA), the state of Oregon, selected researchers from OHSU, and the world-leading "Silicon Forest" high technology industry cluster of Oregon and southwest Washington.
