Position Summary
The Department of Physics invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position.

We are looking for individuals with a strong background and future research plans to expand our Physics Education Research Group. Faculty at Oregon State University are committed to undergraduate and graduate student success. In alignment with this initiative, the College of Science seeks to fill a position in the Department of Physics that will teach physics at the undergraduate and graduate level and will establish a research program in Physics Education.

The activities of the OSU Department of Physics include undergraduate and graduate education, and basic and applied research (www.physics.oregonstate.edu). The department offers doctoral and master degrees, and bachelor degrees in Physics. There are research programs in optics, condensed matter, computational physics and physics education. The department has 16 faculty members, approximately 120 majors, and 45 graduate students. The College of Science provides a core instructional role at OSU, supporting the ideals of learning, discovery, and engagement that are the foundation of a land-grant university. The College embraces instruction and research, in disciplines ranging from the physical to the biological sciences, that are based in unbiased inquiry and a dedication to discovery and innovation. The College of Science is committed to partnering with industry and public agencies to address some of the most compelling challenges of today and tomorrow.

  Position Duties 
 60% - Teaching & Advising:

Teaching of regular credit courses as assigned; including (if applicable) class room preparation, lecture presentations, GTA supervision, timely grading of homework, timely grading of exams, making class information available through the web, holding regular office hours. The total number of regular courses per year in this position description is three (3) for a full time appointment.

Directing undergraduate and graduate research and theses.

Service on master and doctoral committees; mentoring of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral associates; curricular development (single course improvement without dissemination).

30% - Scholarship & Creative Activity:

Pursue scholarly activities through research in the field of physics education. Results should be published in peer-reviewed journals and should be presented in professional meetings, symposia, and conferences.

Obtain grant and contract support for the research, in order to support (if applicable) research assistants, travel, summer salary, publication expenses, research equipment, computer equipment, and other costs of operating a research program.

Provide publication of non-refereed papers, web publications, publication of books and book chapters, patent awards, and inventions.

10% - Service & Profession:

Service on departmental and university committees as assigned.
Involvement with professional associations/societies, holding offices, participation in research advisory or review panels, review manuscripts for journals, organization of conferences, chairing conference sessions, and similar activities. 

 Minimum/Required Qualifications
 Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field; AND
strong record of research, and evidence of potential excellence in teaching.

Commitment to undergraduate and graduate student success.

Commitment to excellence in educating and mentoring a diverse group of learners.

Research experience in Physics Education.

Strong interest in joining a collaborative research community.

Proven ability to teach Physics effectively at lower and upper division levels.

Ability to participate in interdisciplinary projects with other scientists throughout the University.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.


Scholarly Outcomes for Position (academic faculty only)
30% - Scholarly outcomes include dissemination of research via publication of results in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national or international conferences. Leadership in collaboration and community-building. Innovative teaching, curriculum development, and assessment.
