ResponsibilitiesSupervise the Physics Department Introductory Physics Laboratory (IPL) and provide support for the Advanced Laboratories, Lecture Demonstrations, and Interactive Learning Sessions (ILS). This position provides support and organization for over 1,000 students per semester. The Lab Supervisor needs to be highly motivated and organized, but flexible.
Duties include the following:
Oversee approximately 35-40 Teaching Assistants (TA’s) and part-time instructors who teach the labs and cover workshop duties along with the IPL Technician, who helps with equipment set-up and maintenance, and work/study students who set up and rotate experimental equipment in the labs.
Co-organize (with IPL Directors) the Fall orientation meeting with the TA’s and ensure TA safety training is completed with Health/Safety Division.
Schedule teaching for all teaching personnel in IPL and create associated teaching websites. Work with Dept. administration to create IPL lab schedules and IPL Calendar associated with different lecture courses, including College of Professional Studies courses and affiliated programs as required.
Set up student experiments in labs, including installation and maintenance of IPLcomputers and ordering lab supplies. Maintain log of equipment/parts/vendors and post signs and student rosters as needed. Maintain IPL radioactive source log and inventory.
Monitor grading patterns for TAs to improve TA teaching/grading skills. Respond to student emails regarding questions and help resolve grading problems with students.
Interact with Information Technology Services regarding teaching websites (Blackboard), with Registrar regarding grading and registration issues (Banner)and with the Peer Tutoring Program regarding tutoring requests and implementation.
Coordinate TA’s posting of final lab grades, distribute and collect end-of-term IPLsurveys. Set up and supervise end of term make-up labs.
Retrain and discipline IPL staff when necessary. Work with faculty on improvement of IPLexperiments, lab curriculum, and coordination of labs with the lecture course topics.
QualificationsBachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred, in appropriate field (physics) and experience in a teaching lab environment. Familiarity with computer networks and the integration of lab experiments with computers. Excellent supervisory capabilities and interpersonal skills with students. Interest in educational experiments with mechanical skills and know how. Record-keeping and administration experience commensurate with tracking the needs of 35-40 graduate assistants and over 2,500 undergraduate students annually. Experience with Banner and Blackboard software would be helpful.
