The University of British Columbia invites applications for a tenure-track Instructor 1 position in the Department of Physics & Astronomy on the Vancouver campus. Appointment at a tenured rank may be considered for applicants with exceptional qualifications and experience.
This position provides an opportunity to pursue a career based on excellence in teaching, while participating in the intellectually exciting atmosphere of a top-tier physics and astronomy department. The position falls within UBC's Educational Leadership Stream, which is a career path for teaching-oriented faculty that begins with the tenure-track Instructor rank, continues with the tenured Senior Instructor rank, and culminates with the Professor of Teaching rank. This path is analogous to the research-oriented faculty progression of tenure-track Assistant Professor, tenured Associate Professor, and Full Professor rank.
The Physics and Astronomy Department ( www.phas.ubc.ca) is one of the largest and most diverse in Canada. Our faculty and staff are committed to attracting and training outstanding students and conducting forefront research that spans the field. The department has been a leader in transforming both lectures and laboratories to include new teaching techniques and goals, and has a very active Physics Education Research community. This ongoing effort is enabled by many faculty members, graduate students committed to their own role in teaching, and a strong and diverse undergraduate population. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of courses, with a focus on taking a leading role in our First year program, though other courses may be assigned as needed.
The minimum qualification is a PhD in Physics, Astronomy, or a related field. Applicants are required to have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and proven ability to contribute to curriculum development, course design and other initiatives that advance the University's ability to excel in its teaching and learning mandate. This position will be supported by and encouraged to contribute to the department's initiatives in discipline-based education research.
