TT at Long Beach CC CA

Long Beach Community College District is currently seeking one (1) full-time tenure track Physics and Astronomy Instructor commencing with the 2014 fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves physics and astronomy lecture and laboratory classes. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, including but not limited to designing and evaluating curriculum for entry-level science students through engineering majors as well. Participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development. The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Pacific Coast campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Master’s in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR Bachelor’s in physics or astronomy AND Master’s in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR meet equivalent qualifications established by the District, AND Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understand of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
 Desirable Qualifications: Recent experience teaching Astronomy and Physics at the post-secondary level especially community college. Experience designing/writing physics labs. Experience teaching physics labs with computer interfaces. Ability to teach astronomy in an all-electronic (no whiteboard) classroom and to work with computers, multimedia and other technologies which are utilized in providing high-quality classroom and lab instruction. Experience in making students active rather than passive participants in their learning. A commitment to stay current with the latest developments in physics, astronomy, and with astronomy and physics education research. Ability to program (or write scripts) for our planetarium projection system. Evidence of student success in teaching Physics and Astronomy and of participation in student success initiatives in post-secondary setting. Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population. Evidence of the ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class. Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidenced-based assessment of student learning. Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of Astronomy and Physics. Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College. Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole. Commitment to the Mission and Strategic Objectives of Long Beach Community College District. Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Additional Information:
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Salary range of $50,555 - $78,574 is commensurate with academic preparation and experience. SELECTION PROCEDURE Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. Applicants who meet the basic qualifications and who are also deemed to possess the highest degree of desirable qualifications will be invited to the college at their own expense. During the campus visit, each applicant will be interviewed and may be asked to conduct a short teaching demonstration/presentation on a previously announced topic and participate in a writing exercise and/or hands-on practical. The interview committee will rate responses to the interview questions, the demonstration/presentation, and the applicable writing exercise and/or hands-on practical. Based upon this rating, a small number of applicants will be invited to the campus for a second interview. The Superintendent-President will make the final recommendation for employment to the Board of Trustees.
