Telescope Winterover, Univ of Chicago, Amundsen-Scott South Pole station, Antarctica
Unit Job Summary: Temporary 10-meter South Pole Telescope Winterover: Be a member of a two-person crew located at the NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole research station. Responsible for the hands-on maintenance and operation of the South Pole Telescope. Participate in the preliminary analysis of the astronomical data.
The length of this appointment will be from 12/1/2013 until 11/30/2014.
Unit Education: Undergraduate degree in physics or engineering or equivalent experience preferred.
Unit Experience: One year of work in a field working with complex instrument and with considerable expertise in telescopes, mechanical systems including servo systems and cryogenic systems, as well as radio, analog and digital electronics is preferred.
Experience working at a remote site is strongly preferred.
Unit Job Function Competencies: Good problem-solving, organization and communication skills required.
Ability to work independently and as well as within a team environment required.
Ability and willingness to stay on a continuous basis at the South Pole, lasting approximately one-year, is required.
Ability to work in a cold, harsh environment required.
Ability to climb on telescope, bend, reach, lift and use of machines and power tools required.
Able to pass physical and mental qualifying exams required.
