Assistant Professor of Physics

Position Summary

The College of Science, Concordia University Texas, invites applications for a full time teaching position as Assistant Professor of Physics. Teaching responsibilities include: entry level algebra based Physics, Conceptual Physics and Astronomy. Applicants must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education within the context of a Christian university.

Courses to be taught by this position include: PHY 1401 General Physics I, PHY 1402 General Physics II, and AST 1401 Astronomy. This position supports students majoring in Biology, Environmental Science, and students entering teaching fields in science at the secondary level. The College of Science has experienced rapid growth due in part to new programs in Nursing and Environmental Science. The presence of the Concordia University Preserve supports the Concordia Center for Environmental Research and Education, a multidisciplinary research program that unites disciplines throughout Concordia University Texas and provides opportunities for undergraduate research.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position is a regular full-time instructional faculty position that will be initially hired into an Initial Level term contract (normally starting with a 2 year term) that is eligible for consideration for our modified tenure level appointment and will be made at the Assistant Professor rank, and is eligible for advancement in rank. This appointment prefers a completed terminal degree, but ABD and Master's Degree with experience will be considered. This instructional faculty position has an expected annual teaching load of 24 load hours, which must span at least two academic terms. The successful candidate must possess a commitment to teaching and student learning. Courses will be assigned in collaboration with the Chair and Dean in line with credentials, but will include introductory Physics and Astronomy courses. The ability to teach with excellence is required. Concordia expects a high level of quality interaction between students and faculty as part of its definition of teaching excellence. In support of this end, the average class size is kept around 17 students, with the normal size range being 9 - 45. The successful candidate will communicate regularly with other instructors; serve on university committees; attend Division, College, and Faculty meetings; and participate in commencement ceremonies and other official events of the Institution. Faculty members are expected to enrich their teaching strategies year-round and be available for development and administrative projects during the summer.

Position Requirements

  • Ph.D. preferred. ABD and Master's Degree with experience considered
  • Successful teaching is expected; college level experience will be given preference.
  • Shows a strong interest in Concordia's commitment to "Develop Christian Leaders."
  • Applicants must be Christian, have a strong commitment to the liberal arts education in the Christian tradition, and be a member of a recognized Christian church; membership in a Lutheran Church is preferred.

Salary and Benefits


Salary depends upon rank, credentials and experience. Benefits include full medical and dental for the employee, with the option to pay for family members and the option to choose the level of coverage. Employees are enrolled in a pension program paid for by the University and have the option of contributing to a 403B retirement savings plan with a match of 50% of the first 2% of the salary contribution. Other benefits include disability and life insurance policies. The employee and eligible dependents are eligible to attend the University with a full tuition waiver after a minimum employment period of 6 months.
