The Department of Physics at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites
applicants for a Visiting Assistant Professor position starting August
2014.
We seek a broadly trained physicist or astronomer. The
successful candidate will most likely teach courses in introductory
astronomy with labs, introductory-level, calculus-based physics with
labs, and a sophomore-level course in mathematical physics. An earned
doctorate in physics, astrophysics, or astronomy is required. ABDs will
be considered only if the degree will be completed prior to the
start date.
Teaching and research are mutually supportive
activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the
teacher-scholar model in a primarily undergraduate, residential
institution and to providing high quality teaching. Although this
Visiting
position is focused on teaching, there is the expectation that the
person selected will be able to continue their research program while at
TCNJ and the teaching load reflects that. The Physics Department, which
currently has ten full-time, tenure-line faculty members and
approximately 100 majors, is housed in a modern science complex (opened
Fall 2002) that offers state-of-the-art teaching and research
facilities and instrumentation. For more information about the
department, visit: http://physics.pages.tcnj.edu .
Founded
in 1855, TCNJ is a highly selective institution that has earned
national recognition for its commitment to excellence. Emphasizing a
residential experience for its approximately 6,500 undergraduates, TCNJ
is one of Barron's 75 "Most Competitive" American colleges, and U.S.
News & World Report's No. 1 public institution of its kind in the
northern region of the country. The College also offers focused graduate
programs in Nursing, Education, and English. TCNJ was awarded, in
2006, a Phi Beta Kappa chapter-an honor shared by less than 10 percent
of colleges and universities nationally. A strong liberal arts core
forms the foundation for programs offered through TCNJ's seven
schools-Arts and Communication; Business; Education; Engineering;
Humanities
and Social Sciences; Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science; and Science.
TCNJ faculty members are teacher-scholars who share a commitment to
liberal learning. TCNJ is located within an hour, by train, of New York
City and Philadelphia. The College's campus is set on 289 tree-lined
acres in suburban Ewing Township and is known for its natural beauty.
TCNJ has 39 major buildings, including the 4th-best college library in
the nation, according to the Princeton Review. For more information,
visit www.tcnj.edu.
TCNJ is also proud to be the recipient of a National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant, working to support the careers of women
faculty members in STEM disciplines by developing systemic approaches to increase the representation and advancement of women.
Applicants should e-mail a letter of application, a curriculum
vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy (no longer than three pages),
and a description of research interests (no longer than three pages) in a
single PDF file to physics@tcnj.edu.
Applicants should also e-mail unofficial transcripts (graduate and
undergraduate) as
well as arrange for two current letters of recommendation to be
e-mailed, at least one of which addresses teaching abilities. All
e-mails
should have the applicant's name in the subject line. Applications are
due by June 2, 2014. Late submissions will be considered if a
suitable candidate pool is not identified by the deadline. Final offer
of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of a
background investigation.
To enrich education through diversity, The College of New Jersey is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The
College has a strong commitment to achieving diversity among faculty and staff, and strongly encourages women and members of
underrepresented groups to apply.
