Lab Coordinator, UNC-Charlotte

The Department of Physics and Optical Science at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte is seeking applicants for a 12-month non-tenure-track academic staff position as Coordinator of Undergraduate Laboratories.
The Coordinator of Undergraduate Laboratories oversees day-to-day operation of instructional laboratories in entry-level physics, with large latitude for discretion as to how to accomplish the overall mission. UNC-Charlotte offers five foundational Physics courses (Conceptual Physics, Introductory Physics I & II, Physics for Science and Engineering I & II), each with a laboratory component. Enrollment in these laboratories currently averages 1000 students per semester, and are instructed by Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs), typically 30 per semester.
The Coordinator will organize schedules for TAs, graders and exam proctors; conduct bi-weekly training of TAs on specific laboratory experiments; direct TAs in bi-weekly setup of laboratory experiments; act as direct supervisor and emergency back-up for TAs; and provide on-site supervision of labs to ensure the safety of students and TAs. The Coordinator will also supervise operation of the Physics Resource Center, which is an open-format tutoring resource staffed by TAs.
The Coordinator will revise lab experiments for existing courses; develop lab experiments and write associated lab manuals for new courses; and revise lab manuals as required by changes in equipment and curriculum. The Coordinator will develop classroom demonstrations to be used in lectures, and will execute classroom physics demonstrations at the request of faculty. The Coordinator will also be responsible for maintaining all lab equipment and apparatus, including minor electronics repairs; inventory and ordering of replacement parts and expendables; organization of laboratory stockroom; organization and inventory control of equipment; advising on new lab equipment purchases; and staying current with new trends in physics lab education.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field. Teaching experience in basic Physics and laboratories in a college or university setting is required. A strong command of oral and written English is required.
Applications must be submitted electronically at https://jobs.uncc.edu (position #6731) and include (1) a letter of interest that addresses the requirements for the position; (2) a CV; (3) a statement of teaching experience, philosophy, and interests; (4) unofficial copies of undergraduate and graduate transcripts; (5) a list of three professional references including contact information. For full consideration, all application materials should be received by March 15, 2015. Review of applications will begin on that date and will continue until position is filled.
