The AMO Physics Frontier Center (PFC) at JILA and the Physics Education Research (PER) Group at the University of Colorado at Boulder are collaborating to support a physics education outreach program. A two-year Research Associate (postdoctoral) position is available for someone to direct the outreach efforts of the PFC and conduct research on student learning in these environments.
The position will be jointly supervised by Prof. Noah Finkelstein, from the PER Group and Prof. Eric Cornell of the PFC.
The goal of the program is to establish informal science programs with local schools serving populations that are typically underrepresented in science, collaborate with other Physics Frontier Centers, communicate current physics research to the general public and concomitantly research and evaluate these outreach programs using cutting-edge physics education research methods.

Teacher at Douglas High School

Douglas High School just outside of Rapid City, SD has a sudden need for a skilled physics/chemistry teacher. Douglas has perhaps the most attractive demographic in the entire state - it is situated on Ellsworth Air Force Base, and the majority of the students in this district are children of technically skilled air force personnel, so they are often academically talented. Many of the graduates go to top universities nationwide.

Bobbie Traxinger taught physics, chemistry, and physical science at Douglas and she died suddenly last week. The school obviously needs someone to cover her classes for this year, and they hope to find someone who can stay with the position in the future. Postdoc at the University of Chicago

Dr. Sian Beilock in the Department of Psychology at the University of Chicago is seeking to make one full-time Post-Doctoral appointment. This research-oriented position will focus on applying cognitive science principles to physics learning and instruction, with special emphasis on understanding how sensorimotor experience can be used to enhance students’ learning of abstract concepts in physics (e.g., angular momentum and torque). The research will combine fMRI and behavioral measures of learning (techniques taught as part of the position). Requirements include a Ph.D. in cognitive science, neuroscience, psychology, physics, or education. Responsibilities include experiment design, training and supervising of research assistants, data collection, data analysis, and grant and manuscript preparation.
