Assoc/Full at University of Massachusetts - Amherst

The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies (TECS) in the School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is seeking candidates to join a dedicated and accomplished community of faculty, students, and staff. This is a full-time, open rank, tenure track position in Secondary Science Education, beginning in September 2011.

The School is NCATE-approved and offers a comprehensive program leading to Master’s and doctoral degrees. Located in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, the University of Massachusetts Amherst is the flagship campus of the Commonwealth’s university system and is a leading center of public higher education in the Northeast.

Qualifications: doctorate in Science Education or closely related field; substantial background in science, experience and expertise in secondary science and experience with pre-service and/or in-service teachers. Teaching experience in K-12 schools, record or demonstrated potential for scholarship, grant development, research, and publication; Preference will be given to those with interest in curriculum connections across science, mathematics and technology. Relevant areas of research include, but are not limited to secondary teacher education, science teaching and learning processes, issues of equity/multiculturalism in science classrooms, science curriculum and instructional methods, and technology infusion into the school science curriculum.

Responsibilities: teach, advise and direct Master’s and doctoral students in the Math, Science, and Learning Technologies concentration, take a leadership role in the science preparation of pre-service and in-service teachers while working closely with colleagues to develop clinical/professional development school sites; serve as coordinator of the Math, Science and Learning Technology concentration on a rotating basis; maintain an active academic research agenda; participate in seeking and managing externally-funded projects. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in an active research and reform community that has been awarded numerous state- and federally-funded grants focused on mathematics and science education, student learning processes, and teacher enhancement.
