Education: STEM Elementary Education
Lecturer (Non-tenure-track)
Tufts University seeks a full-time Lecturer in Education and Director of STEM Elementary Education. This is a three-year, renewable position, with a start date of September 1, 2011. The position requires a background in teacher education and in a STEM discipline and an earned doctorate in a related field by the time of appointment.
The principal role of the Lecturer/Director will be to develop and direct a new program in elementary education with a focus in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, scheduled to begin in 2012. Responsibilities include working with an interdisciplinary faculty committee, coordinating with other programs and projects (see below), and building partnerships with regional schools. The Lecturer/Director will teach courses across the Department's STEM education-focused graduate programs.
Preferable qualities for candidates include:
Teaching experience in elementary grades and at university levels in teacher education;
Experience in programmatic development and leadership;
Experience in and demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations.
The successful candidate will have rich and varied opportunities for collaboration, interaction, and leadership in STEM education. The Tufts Department of Education has a strong history of activities and close affiliations in STEM teacher preparation and education research, with faculty in the sciences, engineering and mathematics, as well as with the Tufts Center for Engineering Education and Outreach and nearby TERC. Recent efforts include The Early Algebra Project and the Fulcrum Institute for Leadership in Science Education; projects beginning this year include the Poincaré Institute for Mathematics Education, Noyce Fellowships in the Urban Math and Science Teacher Collaborative, and Integrating Engineering and Literacy.
