Brief description of job duties
The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking a Policy Associate who Coordinates efforts between AIP and its Member Societies (MS) and among MS to inform and influence the U.S. Congress and other policy makers to improve science and math policy. While the portfolio of issues covered will be somewhat fluid, the incumbent will likely focus on STEM education (Administration policy, and Congressional authorizations and appropriations) as it relates to the AIP mission. Also responsible for tracking developments in climate change and energy. Represents AIP on issues that fall within his/her area of responsibility at meetings with Executive and Legislative Branch staff, and scientific society meetings. Works with AIP leadership, partners, and other stakeholders to develop and implement policy outreach agendas targeted at key decision makers. Serves as primary policy contact on the issues for which he/she is responsible. Supports the gathering and dissemination of science policy information primarily through FYI, the AIP science and science education electronic newsletter. Ensures the visibility of appropriate FYI topics on the Inside Science web page. Seeks ways to support other elements of the Government Relations Division.
Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, public policy, political science or related field with two to four years experience working for Congress or in federal relations for an organization or association based in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge of science and math education policy issue, public policy formulation process, and strong strategic planning and thinking skills. Excellent written and verbal communications skills are required. Must have the ability to multitask and self direct.
