The National Science Foundation is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Program Director in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS), Division of Materials Research (DMR). This position involves responsibility for the planning, coordination, and management of resources for materials research and education under the purview of the Division of Materials Research.
Responsibilities of the Program Director include:
Maintaining a healthy balance of support for all the needs of the research and education enterprise either through program, division, Foundation, or interagency activities.
Managing program resources so as to provide optimal appropriate scientific judgment to insure fairness and consistency in the grant/declination process without conflict of interests, and with balance among appropriate sub-fields and institutions, and participation of all qualified scientists.
Managing an effective, timely merit review process, with attention to increasing the size and quality of the reviewer pools and broadening participation of under-represented groups including women, minorities and people with disabilities.
Providing scientific expertise, evaluation and advice for other programs in DMR, MPS and NSF, including international, industrial and educational outreach programs, interdisciplinary programs, and cross-directorate programs. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a scientific discipline supported by NSF. In addition, applicants must have six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the program of interest. We are especially interested in applicants with a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in one of the programs covered by the Division. This position will be filled on a one or two year Visiting Scientist Appointment, a Federal Temporary Appointment or an Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment. Federal Temporary and Visiting Scientist appointments will be made under the Excepted Authority of the NSF Act with a current salary range of $105,211 to $163,957 including locality pay for the area.
